Acoustic Beacons

The silent tones linking your living room to your pocket.

One of the most insidious forms of cross-device tracking does not rely on IP addresses or logged-in accounts. It relies on sound you cannot hear.

The Mechanism

Human hearing generally taps out around 20kHz, and most adults lose sensitivity to anything above 16kHz. However, standard smartphone microphones can comfortably record frequencies up to 22kHz, and standard television speakers can play them.

Advertisers embed a specific sequence of high-frequency audio tones (a "beacon" or "audio watermarking") into a television commercial. When the commercial airs, the TV emits this tone into the room.

If you have an app on your phone—say, a seemingly innocuous flashlight app, or a fast-food delivery app—that has requested microphone permissions, it may include an SDK (Software Development Kit) from a tracking company like Silverpush or Alphonso. The app listens in the background for these specific high-frequency signatures.

The Result

When the app hears the beacon, it logs the event and sends it to the tracking company's server. The server now knows, with 100% certainty, that Mobile Ad ID XYZ was in the same physical room as the Television displaying Commercial ABC at 8:14 PM.

This allows the advertiser to attribute a subsequent purchase on the mobile phone directly to the television ad, closing the loop on physical and digital identity.

Defense

The only defense against ultrasonic tracking is strict permission hygiene. Review every app on your phone that has microphone access. If the app does not fundamentally *need* a microphone to function (e.g., a game, a recipe app), revoke the permission immediately.
